At Dermatology & Plastic Surgery Specialists, Mohs micrographic surgery is performed by Dr. Michael Messina, a specialized, double board-certified dermatologist in Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. This advanced training allows Dr. Messina to provide precise, highly specialized skin cancer treatment with a focus on complete cancer removal while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.
Mohs micrographic surgery is considered one of the most effective techniques for treating certain types of skin cancer, especially in delicate or highly visible areas such as the face, ears, hands, and scalp. The procedure removes cancer layer by layer, with each layer carefully examined under a microscope until no remaining cancer cells are detected.
This meticulous approach helps achieve the highest cure rates while minimizing the amount of healthy tissue removed, which can lead to smaller wounds, more precise reconstruction, and improved cosmetic outcomes.
What to Expect During Mohs Surgery
Your visit begins with confirmation of the biopsy site, followed by local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. A thin layer of tissue is then removed, carefully mapped, color-coded, and processed in our lab. Dr. Messina examines the tissue under a microscope to determine whether any cancer cells remain.
If cancer cells are still present, another targeted layer is removed only from the area where cancer remains. This process is repeated until the margins are clear. Many skin cancers are removed in one layer, but some may require additional stages, so we recommend keeping your day open for the procedure.
Once the cancer has been fully removed, Dr. Messina and our team will review the best reconstruction option for your specific surgical site. Depending on the size and location, the area may heal naturally, be closed with stitches, or require a flap or skin graft. You will receive detailed wound care instructions and a follow-up appointment to ensure proper healing.
